Joey Graceffa- Bibliography

Being a huge Joey Graceffa fan prior to this project, I didn’t do too much typical online research. I did however stalk his social medias, re-watch some of his most important videos and read his book!

Well… that was fun? I think? -Eminent 2015 Review-

After being so stressed and completely absorbed in my own eminent person and project, I was super excited to see what everyone else was doing. I enjoyed the learning centers SO much!  It’s crazy having a young YouTuber, next to a controversial musician next to a civil war doctor. Yet all of these people are eminent and have made a difference- it still blows my mind! The whole learning center idea was a blank canvas and it was amazing to see how each individual person decided to paint it!

My learning center was for sure the main focus of my NOTN. I wanted to make a unique representation of Joey Graceffa’s eminence, and a interactive piece to almost “put the cherry on top” and make people do what Joey does on a smaller scale.

LC1

I decided to show Joey’s eminence by creating this poster board, split in half. The left side showing the silhouette of a young boy- a young Joey Graceffa. Around him I put all of the negative things that were holding him back. Hateful words, social media comments, and picture representations of things such as Dyslexia and Alcoholism. I showed all the reasons why he could have given up. But he didn’t, and that’s how he got to the right side of the poster.

The right side is the opposite of the left. Current Joey Graceffa’s silhouette, surrounded by pictures of his accomplishments and paragraphs that fans have left, explaining how much Joey has helped them.

For my interactive component, I wanted people to understand how crazy and brave what Joey Graceffa does is. Joey shares all the details of his struggles with millions of people. To really understand this, I had people share a short piece of their life struggles to those attended NOTN. Even though it was anonymous, and on a far smaller scale, some people still weren’t comfortable or interested in this idea. This really opened their eyes, and my own, of how courageous Joey really is. Those who did share a piece of themselves for the benefit of others, like Joey Graceffa, said they felt almost proud that they got through it, and really understood why Joey does what he does.

All in all, I would say NOTN was a success. Everyone did amazing and everything happened and went well. My learning center was my main concern and went well, so I’m happy to say that I’m proud of myself. Some people that really helped my out and made my NOTN special were Weijin and Anthony. After finding out that my learning center was in the dark, Weijin offered me some of her extra lights. Even though they didn’t end up working, I am so thankful! Anthony also helped me out with this in lending me his phone flashlight to brighten up my center. This was so helpful and I even got a compliment on the lighting I used! Thank you to everyone for an amazing night!

Ok so basically… -Document of Learning-

As you may be able to see from this blog posting being posted after NOTN when it was supposed to be prior, it been a busy time! Anyways, for my Document of learning I decided to talk briefly about my goals, share my speech and my learning center secrets!

GOALS

Some of the goals I had for this project, mentioned in my intro post, were wanting to develop my public speaking skills and show my immense passion for Joey Graceffa through my words. I consider myself, even prior to this project, as a Joey Graceffa fangirl. I’ve watched all his videos so I really wanted to dig into his career and how he’s truly eminent and not just some funny guy on the web. I found a lot of little cool details about his videos, and that really made writing and showing passion through my speech so easy. I tried to choose a prospective that was interesting, but was also passionate about Joey like I was. I really didn’t want to just seem like the fangirl I was. I chose to be Joey Graceffa’s first video camera, and my speech was almost like a letter to his new camera. Here’s my speech introduction for an idea of what I did:

“Sometimes we feel alone. The kind of alone where the shadow of problems and self-doubt that constantly lurk behind us decides to swallow us whole. That kind of alone that resembles the sudden realization that nobody will ever understand you. But, like the tri-pod beneath my small frame, sometimes, something or someone is able to lift us out of that lonely haze. Through my years as his right hand man, I got to see this time and time again. Joey Graceffa has drawn people out t=of the blackness. Nearly seven million to this date, with, my help of course. Not to brag or anything, but I was Joey’s first, now retired, vlogging camera. Probably his favourite camera so you’ve got big shoes to fill, newbie.”

Another goal I had for this project was to learn about YouTube, as it seems like an amazing career. To gather information for this, I attempted to email several smaller YouTubers. After failing emails, no replies and a twitter conversation that was never completed, I had to find this out through research on my own *cries*

SPEECH

speech drafts

All of my speech drafts!

speech pic2

I wrote my speech the first time, edited it- but wasn’t happy with it. Something about it just… sucked. After staring at it for far too long, I decided to re-write it. THREE MORE TIMES. Yes, I kept re-starting it completely, but then came the point where I had to let it be. Time had completely slipped away and I had to stop redoing my poor speech and start practicing. The more I practiced, the more I uncovered all the technical problems within the writing! Unfortunately it was already the day I was planning on presenting my speech and I knew it was too late to save it. Or was it? The unexpected decided to happen. I didn’t have to do my speech that day! With an extra day I was able to perfect my speech. I cut it really close- but I made it!

LEARNING CENTER

When it came to my learning center, I really wanted to create a visual that showed how Joey Graceffa was eminent. I wanted it show what makes him unique without having too much information and have an interactive component as well. I chose a quote that Joey often uses as my inspiration for my center.

Your current situation is not your final destination.

I really wanted to show what Joey Graceffa was going through when he was about my age, and where he is now in all his fame. I had many different ways to display this at first, but I chose to go with simple silhouettes surrounded by things that were going on in their life at that time. Here’s my messy first idea:

LC draft

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.. yeah. it didn’t work out.

Since I pride myself in being a Joey Graceffa fangirl, and Joey shares footage of his life on the daily, I wasn’t really looking for information on him during my interview. My plan was to get information on what being a YouTuber is like. All the things behind the camera, that Joey Graceffa never really talks about. How much does he make? What’s the job like? I wanted to ask YouTubers about what their life is like.

My plan was to email some of my favourite “small”  YouTubers. YouTubers that aren’t well known and don’t have 7 million fans like Joey! This was because I wanted to better my chances of getting a reply! But after nothing but silence and failed emails, I took to Twitter. Most small YouTubers spend a lot of time on Twitter and don’t have too many followers. Again, better chances to get a reply! Right?

Wrong. I tweeted several YouTubers and only got two replies. Yes, this sounds fantastic! But they aren’t exactly what you would expect.

After tweeting one of my favourite YouTubers, Paul Zimmer, approximately 429 time (rough estimate) I became frustrated and was coming to give up. As if he was taunting my by tweeting something other than a reply to me, “you’ll never love yourself half as much as I love you” popped up on my screen. Being the slightly salty person I was at the moment, I tweeted him a reply saying “you don’t love me.” Yes, I said it, and out of every tweet of mine that he could have saw, HE SAW THAT ONE. Not only did he see it, he replied with “I love you”

interview1

Yes, Paul Zimmer said he loved me and that tweet now has over 1000 RT’s and Favourites! *dies happily* But you know.. apparently he didn’t love me enough to be apart of my interview.

The second reply I got made me super hopeful. I got a very new YouTuber named Jaime Rose to notice me AND follow me so I could direct message her.

interview3

I sent her a message explaining what I was planning on doing and she said she’d love to help! I was beyond happy… until “I’d love to help!” was her last message and I haven’t heard back from her since (October 20). I messaged her so many times, but I guess she’d love to help… someone else.

interview2

I  emailed, then tweeted and then emailed again, but here I am. Without a complete Interview. If some magical, greater power were to bless me with a reply, some of the questions I was hoping to ask about YouTube were:

  1. Why did you choose YouTube to be your career?
  2. How long did it take you to turn YouTube into your job?
  3. How did you get involved or discover the YouTube Partnership?
  4. Do you only make money off of adds? If so how much do they make?
  5. What’s the hardest part of being a YouTuber?
  6. What questions do you most frequently get asked about your job?
  7. What advice would you give someone looking to be a YouTuber?

Oh My Goodness Gracianious!

My eminent person is none other than Joey Graceffa. Joey may only be 24 years old, but he’s already made his mark as an American actor, writer, producer, and most commonly known as a YouTube personality. He’s also one of my biggest inspirations in life.

He’s struggled his with a learning disability, his mothers alcoholism, bullying, OID (overactive imagination disorder), his brothers autism, and far more. 16 year old Joey went to YouTube for a creative outlet- but his passion, humor and openness about his struggles has gotten him almost 7 million subscribers and a net worth of 1 million dollars. He’s written, acted in and produced his own web series (“Storytellers“), written a book about his life (called “In Real Life: My Journey to a Pixelated World“) and managed to make millions of fans laugh through their tears, even when they didn’t think it was possible. I know from personal experience.

Having Joey Graceffa as my eminent person may be a struggle, as he’s a 24 year old male from Massachusetts and I’m- not. Although we are extremely different now, I can relate to his school, family and mental health struggles. He’s so relatable that even if you aren’t going through the same struggles as him, it feels like he understands. Joey and I have the same weird sense of humor, play the same video games and watch the same shows. We both also share the same interests in acting, writing, and YouTube.

“You have the power and control to be whatever you want to be, no matter where you start in life.”

-Joey Graceffa

I think studying such an incredibly strong and accomplished person will inspire me so much. Joey Graceffa helped me through my darkest times, and learning how I could do the same for someone in the future is amazing. During this project I really want to learn about perusing YouTube as a career is all about and if it’s right for me. I really want to show my public speaking skills and passion for my eminent person through my speech as well.

All in all, I’m really looking forward to learning and sharing more about Joey Graceffa.

“May the odds be ever in your favor!”

A Day Downtown ft. Books and Friends

bp5 bp1 bp3 bp6

My main goal for this trip was to come out of my shell a little more in terms of making friends with my fellow grade nines. I find myself to take extremely long to get comfortable talking to new people, but I made major progress on this trip. Shoutout to everyone for being amazing and inclusive despite my awkwardness!

I also had never been to the Vancouver Public Library or MacLoed’s Bookstore before. It so was crazy going from such an open, organized and beautiful library to such a chaotic little book store. But I still don’t think I could pickbp7 a favourite! At both places I was so overwhelmed by all the books- I didn’t know what I was looking for or where to start but I had so much fun getting lost in in such incredible places!  This whole trip was so photo-worthy. The rustic architecture of the library against the bright sky and toasted trees was breathtaking. I noticed this mainly on my solo-walk.

On my solo walk, I was so entertained by the people walking on the street and inspired by my surroundings. I wrote a little bit of poetry, here’s a little taste:

The echo of her high heels

like a Gypsy Vanner horse

clicking down the concrete

with purpose.

With power.

“Where did she acquire such confidence?”

I wonder as she walks

maybe she started here;

asking the same question

about the lady in the high heels.

In the end, I loved this trip. I got another book about theories behind the universe (of course), hung out with some pretty rad people, got to explore some fantastic places and got to take a much needed day to reflect and have some fun. All in all- amazing.
